I had a wonderful time listening to the fourth graders give their Living History speeches!

As I was listening, my brain was surfing for new learning and fun facts. Also, I noticed that many of the famous people featured demonstrated many of the stances such as flexibility, persistence, empathy, resilience and optimism that lead to their successes.

Please share your new learning, fun facts and/or thoughts about the important mindset stances of these famous people.

  1. Fredrick Law Olmsted was born in 1822. When he was four his mother died. Often when he was young he got beaten. He had many jobs like surveying land. Fredrick's brother died in 1856. He was known best for making Central Park. Eventually he died in 1903.
George Washington Carver was a great farmer. He was black so he had bad rights. When he was little he got kidnapped but was found and brought back to his mother and father. I would state more facts but... I don't have time!

  8. Michael Jordan was born on February 17 1963. His brother got him into basket ball even though Michael's favorite spot was baseball. Michael wanted to be taller so he went to his mom for help. She said that Michael should put salt in his shoes and say a prayer each night. When he was older Michael played for the NBA. Later he retired so he could play baseball. After his first season he quit so he could play basketball again. In 2003 he retired for good. He showed flexibility when he put salt in his shoes to try to make him tall.

  10. All of these successful people have all of the five stances in common. For example, sports players such as Michael Jordan, Hank Aaron and Venus Williams are all optimistic, resilient, persistent and flexible. They aren't the only ones that have the stances. Frederick law Olmstead was persiistent and resilient and flexible even though he might have messed up on one of his park designs, he never quit. He designed the world famous Central Park, and Yosemite along with a hundred other parks in North America.
